Max said, “It’s never Bob that got it done, with you, is it?”

“Just telling it like I see it, Max. Didn’t mean to offend.”

“You didn’t. It’s just that as long as I’ve known her, you got her closer to seeing reason than I’ve seen before.”

“Different point of view, I think. I came at her from a different direction. I do have a question, though. I might wind up offending you.”

“I don’t know why, either, Bob. The best explanation I’ve got is that I was, oh, how do you put it here… that’s it! ‘thinking with the wrong head’.”

“Well, if there was anybody here who hadn’t done that once or twice, we could give you crap for it.”

“Thanks, Bob. I’ve been thinking you would be aggravated with me for bringing this mess into your world.”

“If Murphy didn’t have this to mess with us, he’d have to get creative. None of us want that, now do we?”

John asked, “Do you ever look at the dark side of things, Bob?”

“Always. That’s why I can appreciate the bright side, when it happens.”

John shook his head. “I’ve known you how long? And you still manage to surprise me.”

Janet and Milly came out with the food to go on the grill. The trays they were carrying it on looked new. I asked John, “Where did you come up with the cool trays? We need to get some for the house.”

“No, you don’t. Some of the fellas at Shady were looking for a project to build in that fancy shop we built them, so I had them build us both some of these trays, to make cooking out for a herd a little easier. Remind me to be sure yours get in your vehicle when you head out.”

“Sure is good to have friends. Thanks, John. Did the fella that did this carving pass acceptable contact?”

“Pass? Not exactly. His score was so high, it sent the machine into an automatic reset.”

“Sounds like our kind of guy. Do you have many you’re going to have to find other places for?”

“Freaked me right out, but not a one.”

“Do we have enough housing for them on Shaved Ape Key?”

“According to Topper, we will by the time we get them there.”

“Jim getting some input as they go up, this time?”

“Yessir. He says it’s a lot easier to do it right the first time, instead of making it right later.”

“Him and Janice doing their part to populate Shaved Ape Key, yet?”

“Haven’t heard, but I’ll bet they’re practicing, at the very least.”

“I don’t have any doubt about that.” I hadn’t realized that Milly and Janet hadn’t gone back in the house. Milly looked confused. I said, “Dangit, where’s Dee when you need her? Milly, I’m sorry, I thought you went back in the house.”

“No problem, Captain. Could you explain about the practice?”

“I can try. You know where babies come from, right?”

She and Janet had been working hard on Earth culture, I don’t know why I didn’t expect it, but she floored me when she came back with, “WalMart?”

John decided he could move air later.
